The goal
The homeowner wanted to repair, restore and prolong the life of a historic Point Loma home, keeping its character intact: the diamond-pane windows, decorative gable trim and arched entry.
The challenge
The paint on the upper gables had failed down to bare wood in places, and decades of layers were peeling across the siding. Coastal Point Loma weather (sun on one side, damp ocean air on the other) had done its work. On a house this age, prep isn't a step; it's most of the job.
What we did
- Set up scaffolding at the gables and stripped failed paint by hand around the decorative trim
- Scraped and sanded the wood siding to a sound surface
- Repaired damaged wood and primed all bare areas
- Brushed out color samples directly on the siding so the homeowner could compare them in real light
- Painted the body a warm gray with white trim and a deep-colored front door
- Hand-painted the diamond-pane window trim and gable details
The result
The before-and-after photos show the difference: a weathered, peeling house brought back to a clean, period-appropriate finish that protects the wood for years to come. Read more about our approach to historic home painting and our work in Point Loma.
