Quick answerDouble G paints kitchen, bathroom and built-in cabinets in San Diego. Doors and drawers come off, everything is degreased, sanded and primed with a bonding primer, then finished in a cabinet-grade enamel. Painting typically costs a fraction of replacing cabinets.

Our cabinet painting process

  1. Remove and label doors, drawer fronts and hardware so everything goes back where it came from.
  2. Protect the kitchen. Counters, floors, appliances and the inside of the cabinet boxes get covered.
  3. Degrease and clean. Cooking residue is the number one reason cabinet paint fails, so this step isn't optional.
  4. Sand and repair. Scuff-sand every surface, fill dings and gaps, and fill grain if you want a smooth finish.
  5. Prime with a bonding primer made for slick, previously finished surfaces.
  6. Finish coats of cabinet-grade enamel, with proper dry time between coats.
  7. Reinstall doors and hardware, adjust hinges, and walk through it with you.

Bathroom vanities and built-ins

The same process works for bathroom vanities, laundry cabinets, bookcases and fireplace built-ins. Bathrooms get a moisture-resistant finish, and built-ins are often painted as part of an interior repaint.

Choosing a color? White and off-white are the most popular, but navy, green and gray lowers with lighter uppers are common in San Diego kitchens right now. The free color consultation includes cabinets.

FAQ

Cabinet Painting FAQ

Is painting kitchen cabinets worth it?

For cabinet boxes that are solid and laid out the way you want, yes. Painting typically costs a fraction of new cabinets, takes days instead of weeks, and doesn't involve demolition or new countertops. If the boxes are water-damaged or falling apart, replacement makes more sense, and we'll tell you.

How long does cabinet painting take?

It depends on the number of doors and drawers and the finish system. Each coat needs proper dry time before the next, and that's what makes the finish last. We'll discuss timing with you before work begins.

Will painted cabinets chip?

Not if they're prepped and finished properly. Most chipping comes from skipping degreasing, sanding or primer, or from using wall paint. We use a bonding primer and a cabinet-grade enamel that cures hard.

Can you paint oak or stained cabinets?

Yes. Oak has open grain that can show through paint. We can leave the grain texture or fill it for a smooth, modern look; we'll show you the difference before we start.

Do you replace hardware or hinges?

We'll remove and reinstall your existing hardware, or install new pulls and hinges you've picked out. If new pulls need different hole spacing, we fill and drill as part of the job.
