We clean the wood, replace rotted or termite-damaged boards with our own licensed crew, and apply a stain or paint suited to the exposure. Sun-baked deck surfaces typically need a refresh every 2 to 3 years.

Fences
Fence painting and staining is one of the most-searched painting jobs in San Diego, and for good reason: a gray, weathered fence makes a whole yard look tired. Horizontal slat fences, like the one in our project gallery stained a rich brown, are popular on newer homes; picket fences and dog-ear fences are common on older lots. We protect the landscaping on both sides and coordinate with neighbors when a shared fence is involved.
Decks, stairs and railings
Decks get the hardest wear of any painted surface: full sun, foot traffic, sprinklers and, near the ocean, salt. Before we stain, we check for soft boards, loose railings and failing stair stringers. On the Crown Point beach house, termite and water damage had compromised the side deck and staircase, so the crew rebuilt them before painting.
Pergolas, patio covers and outdoor rooms
Beams and posts overhead are hard to reach and easy to drip on. We protect patio surfaces and furniture and get full coverage on all sides of the wood. See the outdoor living project.

Fences & Decks FAQ
Should I paint or stain my fence or deck?
Stain soaks in and shows the wood grain, and it's easier to refresh later because it doesn't peel. Solid paint covers more and gives a uniform color, but on horizontal deck boards it can peel under foot traffic and sun. For most decks we recommend a penetrating or semi-transparent stain; for fences either works, depending on the look you want.
How often does a deck or fence need to be restained in San Diego?
Horizontal deck surfaces in full sun often need a fresh coat every 2 to 3 years. Vertical fence boards and railings usually last 3 to 5 years. Shaded and covered areas last longer.
Can you replace damaged boards before staining?
Yes. Because we're also licensed general contractors, we replace rotted or termite-damaged boards, stair treads and railings as part of the job. On the Crown Point beach house we rebuilt a termite-damaged side deck and staircase before painting.
Do you pressure wash decks?
We clean before every finish. On soft woods we use lower pressure or a wood cleaner and brightener so the surface isn't gouged or fuzzed.
Do you paint composite decking or vinyl fences?
Composite and vinyl generally aren't meant to be painted, and paint often fails on them. We'll tell you honestly whether a coating makes sense for what you have.
