Architecture we work on
Craftsman and bungalows
Common in Mission Hills, North Park, South Park and Point Loma. Exposed rafter tails, brackets, shingles and lap siding call for hand work, and siding at the base of the walls often needs repair. See our Craftsman bungalow project.
Spanish Revival and Mission
Hand-troweled stucco, tile roofs, wrought iron and painted wood windows. Stucco repairs need to match the original texture. See our Spanish-style home project.
Early-1900s wood homes
Tall gables, decorative trim and many layers of old paint. Our Point Loma historic home shows the preparation these homes need.

Historic Homes FAQ
Do historic homes need special paint?
Not exotic paint, but the right preparation and primer matter. Older homes often have many layers of oil-based paint, and new coatings need a compatible primer to bond. We recommend coatings based on the original materials and what is already on the house.
How do you handle lead paint on older homes?
Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint under newer layers. We follow lead-safe work practices where required, including containment, careful surface preparation and cleanup. Ask about lead-safe practices during your free on-site estimate.
Can you repair original wood instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. We repair sound original woodwork, trim and fascia where we can, and replace only what has deteriorated, matching original profiles as closely as possible.
Do you help choose historically appropriate colors?
Yes. We offer period-appropriate color consultation and coating recommendations, and can brush out samples on the house so you can see them in place.
Is my home in a historic district?
Some San Diego neighborhoods have designated historic districts or individually designated homes. If yours is designated, check with the city about any review requirements before changing colors or materials. We're happy to provide product and color information.
